Mr. Ovidiu, who spent a lifetime sewing for a great French house, rescued a few old machines when the factory was sold for one coin and a quarter and its people scattered. He brought the iron beasts home and nursed them back into breath.

From their quiet grinding and from wool as honest as fresh bread, these shawls appeared — long, generous, and heavy with meaning. A few pieces in each color, no more: when the wool ends and Ovidiu closes the workshop, the story ends too.

Wrap it once, and it warms you. Wrap it twice, and it keeps watch — carrying on your shoulders a little of Sibiu’s stubborn, handmade soul.

• Hand wash cold. Use wool detergent. Do not wring. Press moisture out in a towel. Reshape and lay flat to dry.
